    Researching Festival of Lights
    1. Research one festival of light of your choice.
    2. Summarize in your own words in at least one to two paragraphs key parts of this celebration. When does this festival happen, who is involved, what happens during this celebration, where does it take place and why it is important to people.
    3. List some artifacts that are used during these celebration.
    To gain some prior knowledge about various festivals, you will be asked to research different Festival of Lights. Some of the choices include:
    Diwali (India, October-November for five days)
    St. Martin’s Day (various European countries, November 11)
    Loi Krathong (Thailand, November)
    St. Lucia’s Day (Sweden, December 13)
    Hanukkah (many countries, December)
    Christmas (many countries including Philippines, Egypt, Mexico, China; usually falls on December 25 but there are some variations)
    Kwanzaa (African-American, December 26-January 1)
    Ōmisoka (Japan, December 31)
    New Year’s Eve (many countries, December 31)
    Three Kings’ Day (many countries, especially Spanish-speaking countries where it is called “El Dia de los Reyes,” January 6)

    This will count as 2 HW assignments.
    1. What is the purpose of the Bill of Rights?
    2. What experiences did the colonists go through that impacted which rights they wanted in the Bill of Rights?
    3. Define the term double jeopardy and give an example
    4. Define the terms quartering and why were citizens worried about this happening to them?
    5. In 1788 why did several states refuse approve the original US Constitution?
    6. Define the phrase “right to assemble” and give an example
    7. Define the term “due process of law” and explain why it is important.
    8. Why did the creators of the Bill of Rights make sure that the rights that don't belong to the government belong to the people?
    9. Amendments 4 and 5 address the people’s rights in what situations?
    10. Define federalism, give an example, and explain the purpose of this system
    11. Which group is responsible to make sure the Bill of Rights are followed? Why?
    12. Re-read the chapter on the Bill of Rights in your textbook.
